Translationese and its Dialects
Abstract. We consider a number of text categorization problems. Can we identify a text as having been translated from another language? Can we determine the source language? Can we determine a writer’s mother tongue by reading a text they wrote in another language? We will answer all these questions (yes, yes, and yes) and we will discuss what this tells us about the nature of translationese.

Profiling the Author of an Anonymous Text
Abstract. How much can we tell about an author just be reading a text he or she wrote? Can we determine if he or she is he or she? Can we determine the author’s age or personality type? We’ll see how to attack these problems and the degree to which we can succeed at each of them. If time permits, we’ll also discuss authorship of the Bible.

Prof. Moshe Koppel of the Department of Computer Science at Bar-Ilan University has done research on a wide variety of machine learning applications including text categorization, image processing, speaker recognition and automated game playing. He is best known for his contributions to the branch of text categorization concerned with authorship attribution. He has published in leading journals in mathematics, computer science, linguistics, psychology, political science and economics. He also serves as an advisor on constitutional affairs in Israel’s Knesset.
